Cichlid

Cichlid

Here you may learn about this amazing and colourful type of tropical fish, and you may get the tips you need for tropical fish care, and make the Cichlids more healthy. The Cichlid is a beauty for any one's sight, well at least some of them are. The Oscar fish for instance looks a little nasty, but then again it got a bad ass personality. Cichlids are quite a popular fish within the aquarium. There are so many types of the Cichlids, at least a number over 1000 different species, and it is likely that more of this tropical fish family are to be discovered. The Cichlid family of fishes, are among the largest families of fish in the world. The Cichlids are often divided into three groups of species:

  • North American Cichlids
  • South American Cichlids
  • African Cichlids

The Cichlid is mainly a freshwater fish, but can also be found in brackish water.

Different types of Cichlids used in the aquarium

Angelfish

Angelfish is one of the popular aquarium Cichlids, and is a real beauty. The Angelfish is one of the most common Cichlids in the tank, and like any other Cichlids are not to be placed with tropical fishes like guppies or neon tetras. The Angel will probably hurt or eat them. The adult angel is likely to be the predator. There are also different types of Angelfish.

Ciclid species: Angelfish
Scientific name: Pterophyllum scalare (the most common Angelfish)
Type of fish: Freshwater fish

Oscar fish

Oscar fish is also a Cichlid used in the aquarium. Most people think it looks distasteful and unattractive to buy, and some may even scream, or not. Anyway it is not exactly an attractive fish for the aquarium enthusiasts to look at, but then again it got the attitude and personality, and is a quite intelligent fish. The Oscar fish is a rather aggressive, and bigger species of the Cichlids. The Oscar is also a jumper so watch out when you take the cover off so that it doesn't hit your face, or bite your nose.

Cichlid species: Oscar fish
Scientific name: Astronotus ocellatus
Type of fish: Freshwater fish

Discus Fish

Discus fish is a beautiful Cichlid fish, which may get big, and is getting more and more popular, but is hard to keep and breed. The Discus is a social fish, and it is a good idea to buy them in groups, if you decide to get it. There is no doubt that the Discus is a impressive sight for most people, with it's sparkling and beautiful colours.

Cichlid species: Discus
Scientific name
: Genus symphysodon
Type of fish: Freshwater fish

Problems that may occur

Some problems that may occur within the aquariums is that the Cichlid may be aggressive toward other Species. The Cichlid can be a very territorial type of fish, especially when it comes to feeding and breeding, but some are more aggressive than others. Tropical fish care is important, so that these tropical fishes, or Cichlids may be happy in their environment, If not they may get stressed like any other tropical fish or living creature. If you have a rock in the tank, you may see that the Cichlid are chasing the other aquarium fishes, away from the rock. The rock is their territory, so why not throw in another rock to the other aquarium fishes :O). Remember that if your aquarium fishes get stressed, something in their environment is probably wrong, try to think about what it may be. Every problem has a solution.

Good luck!
